The 18th International Conference on Heavy Metals in the Environment, ICHMET 2016, was held at Ghent University in Ghent, Belgium from September 12 to September 15, 2016. This 4-day meeting (final programme) was a forum where researchers in the field of heavy metals in the environment presented their latest research and interact across various disciplines, including metal geochemistry and biogeochemistry, environmental technology and analytical chemistry. Selected keynote speakers focussed on various recent developpements in the broad field of heavy metal research. The 18th ICHMET was a continuation of the highly successful conference series that started in 1975 in Toronto, Canada. This conference followed recent meetings in Guiyang, China (2014), Rome, Italy (2012) and Gdansk, Poland (2010). The 19th edition will be hosted in Athens, Georgia.
